The New Wonders of the World: Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a New Wonder of the World and a World Heritage site. It was built by the Inca in the 15th-century. The structure is located on a mountain ridge 50 miles northwest of Cusco, Peru. Although Machu Picchu is called “the lost city of the Incas,”  Archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for an Inca emperor. Construction began in 1400 AD but the site was completely abandoned within a century. Although locals were familiar with the site, it was unknown to the outside world until brought to international attention in 1911 by the American historian Hiram Bingham.  Most of the outlying buildings have been reconstructed in order to give tourists a better idea of what the structures originally looked like. By 1976, thirty percent of Machu Picchu had been restored. The restoration work continues to this day.
