A Salute to Our Military’s Flags


Established during the American Revolutionary War the United States Army is the oldest and largest branches in the military. The flag of the United States Army consists of a blue replica of the official seal of the War Office in the center, above a scarlet scroll inscribed with “United States Army“. Below the scroll is “1775”, which is the year when the US Army was created.  

  The U.S. Air Force was established in 1947 after breaking away from the U.S. Army branch. The flag of the United States Air Force consists of the coat of arms, 13 white stars which represent the 13 original colonies and the Air Force Seal.

      The United States Navy formed during the American Revolution but was officially established in 1794 to fight off pirates. The flag of the United States Navy consists of the Seal of the Department of the Navy in the center, above a large yellow scroll inscribed “United States Navy” in dark blue letters. The background of the flag is a dark blue color.  

     Formed in 1775 the Marine Corps has served in every American armed conflict. The flag of the United States Marine Corps, adopted in 1939, is scarlet red with the Corps emblem in gray and gold.

     The U.S. Coast Guard was established in 1790 by Alexander Hamilton. The flag of the United States Coast Guard is white with a dark blue Great Seal of the United States. The shield on the eagle’s breast has a blue chief over vertical red and white stripes. Inscribed in an arc above the eagle is “UNITED STATES COAST GUARD”; below the eagle is the Coast Guard motto, “SEMPER PARATUS” (“Always Ready”) and beneath that the numerals 1790 representing the year it was founded.
