Flag Day & a Birthday

FlagOn June 14th we celebrate Flag Day in the United states. On  this day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental the flag of the United States was adopted. Also, the United States Army celebrates the Army Birthday on this date. Congress adopted “the American continental army” after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. In August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress. God bless America our military!!

Happy Vintage Thanksgiving!!

Just discovered a new stash of vintage postcards while I was putting together the November posts on World War II. While the other cards (and this one) date from the early 1900s, the new ones are from the 1930s. Looking forward to sharing those at Christmas.

A Salute to My World War II Heroes

MariePortraitFormalNsgSMThis November 11th, America will honor her veterans of all wars. Being from a family of pack rats, Old Granny has agreed to share some of her souvenirs of her stint as a nurse in the Army during World War II. At ninety-one years old, Lt. Marie is feisty with an amazing memory for detail. Because she values her privacy, I agreed to omit her last name and call her Lt. Marie. Lt. Marie maintained all of her records from the time she graduated from nursing school and joined the Army Nurse Corps in April, 1945 to her discharge the following year after the war ended. The pic is Lt. Marie in her dress uniform.

Lt. Marie will share some pics and papers (and an occasional true story) on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays throughout the month, while I’m trying to write 50,000 words in 30 days.  If necessary, use the magnification button in the bottom right corner to read the text of the docs. Next year, Papa’s WWII pics of England when he was stationed in London to repair the ships as they returned to port.

Soul Cakes: A Halloween Tradition

On Halloween in parts of ancient Britain, soul cakes were distributed to the poor. Soul cakes’ origins date at least back to Medieval times. Why were they given to the poor, especially around Halloween? Check out my post at Secret Cravings Publishing on the ancient tradition of Soul Cakes with a recipe, no less. So soft and delicious!

Celebrating Fall with Vintage Postcards

Fall is here!  The dogwoods have started to redden. The tips of some of the other trees are tinged with yellow and orange and a bit of cool is in the air. I’m loving it! Thought I’d celebrate fall with a few vintage postcards over the next few weeks. The first is Thomas Jefferson’s home, probably pre-1940, maybe earlier. Lovely in the fall color. Feel free to pin or copy for your personal use.

Note: Checked out a current aerial pic of Monticello. All of the trees are gone. So, this is a snapshot from times past.

More tomorrow,  Rita

The Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia

In a luxurious resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia where the trees stand cloaked in fall colors, the apples and pumpkins are ripe for harvest, and pots of apple cider simmer beside the fireplace, a couple in the autumn of their lives surrender to lust and discover love.

FallNGA2For the next few days, I’ll share the beautiful fall scenery of North Georgia which is the location for my erotic contemporary romance from Liquid Silver Books, The Caretaker’s Lady. The first feature is an image of Blue Ridge Mountain in North Georgia with a short excerpt from the book. The play of light and shadow on the fall scenery is magnificent.

John stopped on the path. Cathy halted beside him.

“Close your eyes for a moment while we step onto the overlook.”

She frowned. “That requires a bit of trust.”

He squeezed her hand. “You can always trust me, Cathy.”

“Okay.” She closed her eyes and took his arm as he guided her forward a few feet.

“Open your eyes now.” She heard the excitement in his voice. Then she saw why.

The Blue Ridge Mountains lay before them in their early autumn colors. In places, the clouds obscured the sunlight, creating a chiaroscuro patchwork of brilliant color and shadow in the valleys and on the mountainsides.

“Thank you for sharing this with me, John. It’s magnificent. Pristine, as though people have never walked these mountains.”
