LESSON PLAN for Rita Bay’s Blog 

Subject Area:  Western History & Culture, Integrated Reading, Writing and Language

Grade Level:  Any                            Time Frame:  Daily

Goals/Standard:  Using Rita Bay’s Blog, the student will:

  1. understand the significance of Western history & culture as foundations for contemporary American life and culture and
  2. improve his/her reading, writing and language skills through guided reading/writing activities.

Objectives:

  1. Evaluate the impact of Western history and culture on American life and culture
  2. Assess the significance of speeches delivered or stories written by contemporary or historical figures on American life and culture
  3. Analyze the impact of primary source documents on the development of American life and culture
  4. Develop a personal system for collecting, organizing and assessing information

Resources/Materials: Computer with Internet access

     Sample Content Page 

     Materials for student journal to include:

         1.   binder, paper, pen, paper, dictionary  AND/OR

         2.   computer, word processing program, printer  

Assignments:

1.  Prepare Journal in a binder or computer file folder to include the following sections:

             Cover Page  (Include your name, the title and date)

             Content Pages (number pages as entries are written)

             Vocabulary Section (one sheet for each letter of the alphabet)

             Index Section (one sheet for each letter of the alphabet)

2.  For posts of speeches/documents/stories:

            1.  Read the post on Rita Bay’s blog.

            2.  Define unfamiliar words and include them in your journal’s Vocabulary Section

            3.  Using a Content Page, research the history of the speaker/writer, write a brief summary of the content of the blog (include the main idea and supporting points), describe the purpose of the speech/poem/story, assess whether the author/speaker achieved his/her purpose

             4.  Identify the main words and add them (and the Content page number) to the Index Section

3.  For other posts,

             1.  Read the daily post on Rita Bay’s blog

             2.  Define unfamiliar words and include them in your Journal’s Vocabulary Section

             3.  Using a Content Page, write a brief summary of the blog’s content, describe the purpose of the blog

            4.  Identify the main words and add them (and the Content page number) to the Index Section 

Evaluation:  Maintain completed journal in binder as documentation
