The Dominican Republic is located southeast of Cuba on the island of Hispaniola which it shares with Haiti. It is one of the Greater Antilles which is located in the Caribbean and is known for its mountains and lakes. After Cuba, the Dominican Republic is the next largest Caribbean nation with a population of 10 million.
Like the Bahamas, the island was settled by the Tainos. In 1492 Christopher Columbus landed and Santo Domingo became the first European settlement. It passed from Spanish to French to Haitian hands until it became independent in 1821. After several dictatorships and intervention by the United States, it has become a representative democracy. The country’s economy was based on sugar production but has moved to the service industry and tourism, especially for its golf courses. Much too public for Aphrodite’s Island.
