My guest at “An Author’s Desk” today is Samantha Combs, an author of YA paranormal and horror books. Samantha has nine books published including her debut novel, Spellbound, a Global Ebook Award-winner for Speculative Fiction-Fantasy. Samantha is the unwitting caretaker of a bitchy, snarky, world-weary muse named Musina She lives and writes in Southern California where she juggles being a wife, a mother, a Risk Manager and an author. When she’s not writing or at her full time job, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. Her guilty pleasures include reality television, the Food Network channel and shoes.
Samantha will share her writing secrets and tell us about The Deadlies, her newest book. The Deadlies, Samantha’s YA paranormal was released this week at Sweet Cravings. The concept for the story came from her discussion with a friend about guilty pleasures.
I couldn’t write on a desk even if I had one. I have a dented place in our sofa I call my writing home. I shove the ottoman up to it, stretch my legs across that and plop my trusty laptop on, well, my lap. With the Food Network Channel or ANYTHING on the ID channel in the background, I let my muse go crazy.
When Calliope Flood catches the unwanted attention of prettiest and most privileged girls at her new school, she learns they are possessed of more than just good ole’ Southern charm; they are also possessed by the demons of the Seven Deadly Sins.
Whether she likes it or not, the Ravens want the pretty new girl to become one of their members. Their club is so secret, only a select few know their truth. As a budding journalist, Callie is more interested in investigating them than joining them. When people begin to disappear, she soon discovers the Ravens aren’t just interested in her for her looks; slowly, she learns she’s a legacy. Calliope enlists her eccentric Aunt, her new friends, and a quietly disarming Southern boy to form their own group, The Virtues, to free the girls, and the town, from the demons that have taken over their lives.
